Spider-Man: 10 Ways Miles Morales Is Eclipsing Peter Parker
7. The New York Focus Suits The Character
Over the years a great number of Spider-Man stories have made a big deal of the Big Apple. As a resident New Yorker, Spidey's always had strong roots in the city. For years Peter carried this very well; you need only to look at his "I'm a New Yorker" speech in the pages of Spider Island to see how important the city is to the character.
Now, with Pete in full globe-trotter mode thanks to his Parker Industries ties, we're seeing less and less of that pride in the character. This isn't a bad thing; seeing Peter tackle the Zodiac in the UK did give me a particular local thrill and it's a great change for a character who was so stationary for so long.
As far as sixteen year old Miles is concerned, however, the New York focus is excellent for getting the best out of the character. Miles represents a different type of New Yorker to Pete, simply by way of heritage. As a result he'll face different struggles to those of his predecessor, and will have to be judged against the other hero more directly as they're now both public figures.
Seeing how Miles adapts to Pete's city, and vice versa, will be very interesting.
