Stan Lee's 20 Greatest Marvel Comics Creations
13. Daredevil
The best of the Netflix Defenders is yet another one of Stan Lee’s brilliant creations. Charlie Cox’s excellent portrayal has just about washed away that Ben Affleck aftertaste too, which is good news for Daredevil fans as he deserved so much better than the hokey 2003 movie.
Always keen to showcase a wide range of characters, Daredevil’s obvious unique selling point is his blindness. Right up until his recent death there were stories of Lee receiving fan mail from blind Marvel readers and their carers, thanking him for the character. On the page and off the page, Daredevil is a character who truly made a difference.
His disability isn’t even a flaw here; it’s an asset. Because of his blindness, Daredevil gains extra control over his other senses, allowing him to see like radar. As Matt Murdoch, he’s avidly non-violent, dealing out justice through the courts in his job as a lawyer. Once he dons the Daredevil costume though, he dishes out justice the old fashioned way.
Daredevil certainly had a place in Lee’s heart too. In Stan Lee: Conversations, he picked out Daredevil #47, where Murdoch defends a blind Vietnam veteran, as one of his all time favourites.
