Before that, Morrison had already totally redefined who The Joker was for the wider audience. In an era when Alan Moore and Brian Bolland had already turned the character into a much more frightening and dangerous prospect than ever before, Grant Morrison and artist Dave McKean provided a totally new conception of the Clown Prince Of Crime. Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On A Serious Earth was, for a time, the best-selling graphic novel of all time. Which was all the more surprising when you consider what a weird book it is, delving into the psychological mileu of Batman and his various enemies. The Joker especially shines, with a new spin on his whole shtick: he's not insane, he's super-sane. The Joker is fully aware of the ridiculousness of his existence, and his rivalry with Batman, and the insanity of Gotham means that he recreates his entire personality every day.
