Thor: 10 Legendary Mjolnir Facts

6. Loki Is To Blame For The Short Handle (and Sif's Hair)

Mighty Thor
Marvel Comics

Sif was an Asgardian woman with long blond hair and was the constant childhood companion to Thor and Balder. As a cruel jest, Loki - God of Mischief and half-brother to the Thunder God - cut off all of Sif’s golden hair. Thor threatened Loki with violence if he didn't make it right, and thus the rogue went to the Dwarves of Nidavellir for help.

Loki hired the Sons of Invaldi to create the hair, a magic ship, and a spear for the gods. Unable to resist a wager, he then bet the dwarf Eitri that he could not make finer treasures. Already charged by Odin to create a war hammer from a piece of Uru, the dwarf created a golden ring and a magical golden boar that could fly, then returned to his hammer. Afraid he was going to lose his bet, the Trickster God turned himself into a moth and distracted Eitri’s assistant at the forge when he was creating the handle. To the surprise of none, Loki rightly lost his bet.

Loki was either unwilling or unable to pay the Sons of Invaldi for the hair they created, so they decided that “for the price of naught, they would create hair of naught.” The Dwarves created dark hair from the blackness of night that immediately began to grow the minute it touched Sif’s head. The exotic black hair made her even more attractive to Thor, and the God of Mischief’s attempt to ruin their relationship failed.
