Titans: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Jason Todd

9. Fans Initially Hated His Gritty Rebooted Origin Story

Jason Todd
DC Comics

We may be currently losing our minds over the live-action debut of the badass Jason Todd, but his rebelliousness wasn’t always considered one of his finer qualities.

Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC switched things up, with Dennis O’Neil rebooting the character’s origins. No longer was Jason a carbon copy of his predecessor who grew up in a circus environment – instead, he was an orphan who matured on the streets after his mother died of a drug overdose and his father vanished after failing a mission for Two-Face.

Despite the criminal influences in his life, Batman took him in and trained him, eventually allowing him to become Robin. However, things weren’t exactly smooth between the pair. Unlike his predecessor, Jason was reckless, outspoken and knowingly defied Batman’s orders. He also struggled with anger and often lost control in the field.

The darker retelling of his origins did not go down well with fans, who were very vocal about their dislike towards the new Jason and his bad attitude. This would prove to be the beginning of the end for this troubled Boy Wonder.
