5. The Superior Foes Of Spider-Man, Volume 1
Spinning out of Superior Spider-Man #1 (see what I did there?), often describes as the revamp's sleeper hit (although this largely seems to be by Marvel themselves), Superior Foes explores what life is like for several of Spider-Man's rogues gallery now that there's a less forgiving Webslinger. Starring the new Sinister Six - Boomerang, Shocker, Overdrive, Speed Demon and the new Beetle (the sixth member, the robotic Living Brain, having been reprogrammed by Spider-Man to serve as his assistant prior to the launch of the series) - this title has an indie comedy sensibility; following the inept group of B-list super-villains as they attempt to pull off several mad cap schemes (one of which features a hunt for the cyborg head of former crime boss, Silvermane) and what these "costumes" get up to on their down time. The duality of the comic book superhero and their civilian life style is a trope as old as superhero comics themselves and it's refreshing to see a twist on the format by Superior Foes presentation of what life is like for the other half, especially through the lenses of a group as incompetent as Boomerang's Sinister Six (Five). Additionally, Superior Foes of Spider-Man makes good use of the rich collection of characters from the Spidey criminal underworld, the hapless group running afoul of the Chameleon, Hammerhead and Tombstone to name but a few of the cameos in Nick Spencer's fantastic screwball comedy.
