10 '70s Sci-Fi Movies You Need To Watch Before You Die

1. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

A very disturbing and controversial movies for its time, A Clockwork Orange was one of Stanley Kubrick’s greatest masterpieces of his career. Adapted from Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel of the same name, the director was able to translate the book’s dystopian world building and violent themes on screen.

Every single aspect of the movie is perfect. Malcolm McDowell gives a top notch performance as the sociopathic Alex DeLarge. The script is excellent for its use of Nadsat slang and the story doesn’t hold back when it comes to “ultra-violent” moments either.

Furthermore, Kubrick made the interesting decision of leaving the film on a more ambiguous note. In the novel, there is a final chapter in which Alex outgrows his violent behaviour and contemplates starting a family. But in the movie, it simply ends with his inward thought “I was cured, all right”, implying he's gone back to his hold ways, even after therapy.

A Clockwork Orange is simply one of the greatest movies ever made. Not many other films can be so eerily comical and uncomfortably nightmarish at the same time. Almost 50 years on, it still remains a thought-provoking drama.
