5. Speed (1994)

Just when you thought the playing field couldn't get any smaller, Keanu Reeves' Jack Traven manages to do Die Hard on a Bus. Traven is a bomb disposal expert from the Los Angeles SWAT department and for once, he's not guilt ridden about anything. At the beginning of the film he, along with his friend Detective Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels) foil mad bomber Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper). They also seem to have killed Howard in the confusion of a second bomb that he set off. It turns out that Howard didn't go to the big gunpowder keg in the sky after all. Besides that, he isn't just a mad bomber, he's a vindictive so-and-so as well; blowing up Harry in revenge for spoiling his victim count at the start of the film. But before Howard kills Harry, he tells Jack Traven that he's put a bomb on a bus; which bus it is and where to find it. The bomb has been rigged to blow up if the bus goes under or over 50 miles an hour. After a slight misunderstanding with the bus driver, who gets shot; a female passenger, Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) takes over driving the bus. Traven then has to disarm the bomb and catch Howard. Despite having plot holes big enough to lose the bus in, Speed does pretty well as a Die Hard clone on wheels.
