Done To Death: The awkward teen. Perhaps it's unfair to call guys like Michael Cera out on their boyish looks, but there are plenty of actors who pull off mature roles and successful careers despite a young face. Cera hasn't quite managed to bridge that gap yet, although he's tried in a few recent roles, but if there's a lesson from Superbad, Juno, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World it's that Michael Cera is cast as same character in all of these, and that character is Michael Cera. Jonah Hill, Cera's Superbad counterpart, has made the move into different roles, despite his capacity for type-casting, having now appeared alongside the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in roles that were nominated for Academy Awards. This could just be a disparity in career choice - maybe Cera wants to be forever young - but the awkward teenager shtick is only going to last so long. Fun as it may be to appear in every comedy that comes along, Cera should take a page out of the Hill playbook and start sprinkling some serious roles in with the goofball ones.
