What is the Internet for other than listlessly complaining about upcoming films, possibly before we've even seen a sliver of footage, and maybe before shooting has even started?

Well, with social media bringing us all closer to actors than ever before, it's no longer just us nobodies who get to opine loudly about how terrible an upcoming film looks.

Though most Hollywood stars understandably play things diplomatic and keep their mouths shut about the work of others, sometimes they just can't resist but speak up and express their dislike of a movie soon due for release.

These 10 actors, whether shamelessly piping up on social media or not-so-subtly implying their disdain elsewhere, all made their feelings pretty clear about these soon-to-release movies.

From actors calling out disappointing representation to those decrying unnecessary remakes of their own beloved classics, and even actors suggesting their own impending releases might be duds, these performers all put niceties aside to say what they really felt deep down.

In some cases it generated major headlines online, while in others it managed to fly under the radar somewhat, but here we spotlight their brutal honesty laid bare...

10. Christian Navarro - The Little Mermaid

UNCHARTED Movie
Netflix

In the first of two live-action adaptations of classic Disney animations on this list, we have the upcoming new version of The Little Mermaid, which wrapped shooting last summer for release in May 2023.

Though the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey as Ariel caused hand-wringing from all the usual suspects, for the most part the inclusive, colour-blind casting was well-received by fans.

Yet actor Christian Navarro, best known for his role on 13 Reasons Why, felt that Disney didn't go far enough, lamenting the casting of a white actor, Jonah Hauer-King, as Ariel's love interest Prince Eric. Navarro said in a since-deleted 2019 Instagram post:

"Literally Disney saw a who's who list of actors of color and STILL went with the white guy... So much for diversity. I guess two brown leads would have tanked the movie right? Boring."

Navarro later followed up with an also-deleted post on his now-deactivated Twitter account:

"Just came back to say; after months of seeing every person of color they could think of for the role of Prince Eric, Disney somehow still cast a white guy. I guess diversity is just a word. And THATS Hollywood. One brown person is enough, two brown leads is unthinkable."

As it turned out, Navarro himself had auditioned for the part of Prince Eric, and the Puerto Rican actor was left frustrated at Disney giving the part to a white actor despite the potential for the film to feature a non-white romance.
