What We Know

Chastain was cast all the way back in summer 2017, back when Dark Phoenix was slated to open in November 2018. But since the movie kept getting delayed and now nobody will see it until June, the mystery of her character has not yet been uncovered.

Speculation aside, the one thing we do know for a fact is that she'll be the antagonist of the film, and in a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, the actress shed some more light on her role to host Jimmy Fallon:

"I play this character from another world. And I come to Earth because Miss Jean Grey has a power that I want to harness for my own uses... I get to beat up a lot of X-Men in the movie. Maybe even kill some."

Who She Might Be Playing

Early on, there were rumours that Chastain was playing Lilandra, the princess of the alien Shi'ar Empire. But the actress herself denied this in the comments of an Instagram post.

The most recent trailer has sparked theories that she might be playing the living embodiment of the Phoenix Force, visible only to Jean Grey. Director Simon Kinberg once described her role as an "amalgam" of different characters, so maybe the character takes pieces of existing villains like Lilandra, and incorporates them into a brand-new supervillain with crazy Phoenix Force powers.

From certain images we've seen from the film, it looks like Chastain's character will have some sort of influence over Jean Grey, so expect her to be a figure of immense power either way.
