10 Actors Who Just Aren't Trying Hard Enough

1. Bruce Willis

Career High: Unbreakable Career Low: Cop Out Since offering arguably his finest role in 2000's Unbreakable, Bruce Willis has done very little to suggest that he is still capable of offering strong, engaging performances that appeal on any level beyond the macho swill of The Expendables. For the most part the actor seems to sleep-walk through roles that are well below him - as in the awful Fire With Fire (it co-stars Vinnie Jones if any indication were needed of its quality) - seemingly all too content to pick up pay-cheques rather than pushing himself to his best work. There are exceptions of course, which serve only to prove the rule: Willis is hilarious and tragic in Moonrise Kingdom and attracted praise for his performance in Looper (though even that was very similar to the pattern he tends to follow these days), but for an actor who has made 11 features since 2010, and who has at least four coming next year, it's just not a good enough hit rate. And a cursory glance at his five major upcoming projects proves that Willis isn't exactly testing himself (or that Hollywood doesn't see him beyond a stereotype): GI Joe: Retaliation, Die Hard 5, Red 2, Kane & Lynch and American Assassin all sound like projects that Willis could simply pull out his standard performance for. Hardly challenging, and it's a shame.
