Jack Nicholson is without question one of the most celebrated actors of all time, with three Oscar wins to his name and literally dozens of fantastic, memorable performances.

Rumours emerged in recent years that the actor had retired, possibly due to progressive memory loss, which Nicholson himself denied, instead insisting that he no longer has the drive to constantly put himself out there.

Despite claiming he's not retired - at least not officially - the acting legend has turned down a number of prize roles since his last, in the 2010 drama dud How Do You Know.

Above all else, Nicholson refused two roles that went on to receive Oscar nominations - Robert Duvall's part in The Judge, and Bruce Dern's protagonist in Alexander Payne's Nebraska.

Additionally, he was set to star opposite Kristen Wiig in a remake of the Oscar-nominated German-Austrian comedy Toni Erdmann, but dropped out last summer.

Though Nicholson remains insistent he isn't formally retired, it's tough to imagine the 82-year-old actor going before cameras yet again after a decade away. He's almost definitely done, sadly.
