10 Actors Who May Have Given Up Acting
6. Meg Ryan
Throughout the 1990s, Meg Ryan was one of the most famous and successful actresses on the planet, netting three Golden Globe Best Actress nominations and a string of critical and commercial hits (none more than Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail).
Ryan attempted to veer away from her rom-com typecasting throughout the 2000s with edgier roles in the likes of Proof of Life, In the Cut and Against the Ropes, though almost every film she appeared in during the decade was critically panned.
She has starred in just two remotely significant movies over the last 10 years, one being her widely-slated 2015 directorial debut Ithaca, which came and went without making a peep. Numerous other projects she was attached to also never came to fruition.
In a recent interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, Ryan confirmed that she never set out to be an actress and struggled with fame, which prompted her to take a step back from the limelight in the early 2010s.
Given that her last wide theatrical release was 2008's The Women and she's gone four years without starring in any films whatsoever, it seems that Ryan is probably done with Hollywood for good, and quite content about it too.
