10 Actors You Won't Believe Have Never Been Nominated For An Oscar

9. Martin Sheen

Apocalypse Now (1979) was nominated for eight Oscars and won two of them, for sound and cinematography, and today the film has become legendary for its intensity and (less flatteringly) for its troubled production. Robert Duvall was deservedly nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his unhinged performance as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore and yet Martin Sheen as Willard was absent amongst the nominees for Best Actor. Willard's self-containment, punctured by moments of violence like the infamous opening, is crucial to the film. It wasn't the first snub of Sheen's career, which was the lack of an Oscar nomination for his charismatic performance as psychopath Kit in 1973's Badlands. He was later recognised by the Golden Globes and Emmy-nominated for The West Wing, but his film roles have been more infrequent in recent years, making an acting Oscar nod less likely as the years go by.
