10 Actors You Won't Believe Have Never Been Nominated For An Oscar

8. Michael Sheen

Michael Sheen - not to be confused with the previous entry - initially worked in theatre but has more recently become known for his excellent character studies in films such as The Queen (2006), Frost/Nixon (2008) and The Damned United (2009). The latter centres on Brian Clough's tenure as manager of the football club Leeds United and while it remains fairly unknown in the States, Sheen's nuanced portrayal of Clough as an arrogant but lonely man is fantastic. Although Helen Mirren was a shoo-in for Best Actress for The Queen, Sheen wasn't nominated for his Tony Blair, which dances on the line between comedic interpretation and caricature. Frost/Nixon is dependent upon the tension between the two eponymous men, so that omission is particularly glaring given Frank Langella was rewarded with a nomination for his portrayal of Nixon. Currently, Sheen is starring in the glossy Showtime drama Masters of Sex, but hopefully will return to film and receive the Academy recognition he deserves.
