10 Actors You Didn't Know Have Retired

3. Tobey Maguire

To a certain generation of film fans, Tobey Maguire is Spider-Man. Sure, Andrew Garfield has his supporters, and Tom Holland is wowing as ol' Web-head in right now, but Maguire made for a phenomenal Spidey in Sam Raimi's trilogy.

There's far more to Tobey's bow that just the Wall-Crawler, mind, for he also impressed in Pleasantville, The Cider House Rules, Seabiscuit, and The Good German. The reason why Maguire hasn't been seen in anything of note in recent years, though, is that he has effectively retired from acting.

Instead, the former Peter Parker is these days more interested in producing movies, with 12 producer credits under his belt and a 13th picture on the way. In fact, the last time that Tobey Maguire was in front of a camera was back in 2014's Bobby Fischer biopic, Pawn Sacrifice, where he played the headline act and also served as producer.

Since then, the only acting credit to Maguire's name is him narrating The Boss Baby. Tobey was asked whether he had retired from the profession in a 2019 interview with THR where he was evasive, saying "I'll do what I feel called to do."

Of course, there's major rumours out there right now to say that Tobey Maguire will once more be suiting up as Spider-Man alongside the Garfield and Holland versions of the character in this December's Spider-Man: No Way Home - but until that happens, it looks like acting is something very much in Maguire's rear-view mirror.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
