Before Jim Carrey struck gold with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb & Dumber, he appeared in other films like Peggy Sue Got Married, Earth Girls Are Easy, and the Dirty Harry sequel, The Dead Pool. However, his first leading role was in the lesser-known horror flick, Once Bitten, released in 1985.

In the film, Carrey plays Mark Kendall; a geeky highschooler who is seduced by a countess at a strip club. Little does Mark know that the voluptuous vixen is a 300-year old vampire who only desires him because his virgin blood will keep her young.

Although Carrey sometimes lays on the zany humour a little too thick, it's nice to see the rubber-faced comedian understating his comedy. Throughout, he maintains a fine balance of keeping his character silly yet believable (even though you don't buy him as a teenager for a second). A lot of the dialogue is pretty bad, but Carrey's talents allow him to make even the cheesiest lines sound funny. Once Bitten is, by no means, a masterpiece but it's worth a watch for Carrey's performance.
