Not to be deterred after the critical response to Spider-Man 3, Sony is still intent on getting Venom his own movie. But Venom himself has gone through a number of changes since Sony first thought of doing a film.

Back when Sony began considering the idea, the concept of a Venom solo movie would probably have been the "Lethal Protector" version - Eddie Brock as the symbiote host, trying to redeem himself by brutalizing those who harmed innocents.

Since then, Venom went through some dramatic changes. Several years ago, Marvel bonded the symbiote with Flash Thompson, who lost his legs as a soldier overseas, and the new Venom worked for the government.

The recent incarnation sees Flash taking Venom elsewhere - to the stars! Flash joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now he's fighting in the cosmos so the symbiote can redeem itself.

This would give another potential partnership for Marvel and Sony, especially as Venom could team up with or become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. And if you fudge their ages a little, Flash could have easily been an upperclassman at Peter Parker's high school who tormented Pete before graduating and joining the military.

It would give fans a fresh take on Venom that would never remind them of Spider-Man 3.
