10 Alternate Endings To 2020 Movies You Almost Saw
4. There's No Dragon Colonoscopy - Dolittle
The Robert Downey Jr.-starring Dolittle reimagining was undoubtedly one of 2020's most peculiar and misguided projects, never more so than during its infamous final sequence where Dolittle (Downey Jr.) faces off against Ginko-Who-Soars (Frances de la Tour), an angry dragon guarding the tree which can cure the poisoned Queen (Jessie Buckley).
Dolittle ends up quelling the dragon's temper by clearing up a blockage in its colon, removing a pair of bagpipes and a suit of armour from the offending orifice.
But The Hollywood Reporter's incredible post-mortem on the movie makes it clear that the ending - as well as most of the movie, honestly - was heavily tinkered with during post-production.
In fact, the ending originally didn't feature the dragon "colonoscopy" at all:
"The original ending - which, like the ending in the version that hit theaters, featured a dragon, but which did not involve Downey Jr. giving the dragon an enema - was said to lack humor and focus on a familial thread pegged to the death of Dolittle's wife. 'It felt like a morose father-son story, and there wasn't a big animal presence,' says one insider familiar with the process."
Apparently it was none other than Downey himself, who also produced the film, that came up with the infamous dragon proctology exam in the closing stages of reshoots. Oof.
