8. Ginger Snaps
Source//Motion InternationalGinger Snaps nearly didn't make this, as technically it could be lumped in with horror films set in high schools which is a totally different genre altogether (Scream, The Faculty etc.). However, the typical horror genre cues (lycanthropy, murder, mutilation) are more representative of high school woes, rather than being for horror alone. Gingers werewolf-ism is a thinly veiled metaphor for puberty (sudden sprouting of hair, moodiness, blood everywhere), and so this film places itself firmly in the awkward high school genre. Its just a bit more gnarly than most. Ginger and her sister Brigitte are two fairly weird teen girls who are obsessed with death. When they get attacked by a large dog (spoiler: its not a large dog), Ginger gets bitten and strange things begin happening to her. She grows excessive hair and a tail, whilst becoming extremely aggressive and menstruating hardcore. Ginger kills a dog, then a few kids from her school (PMS is a b*tch, isnt it?), and when she turns full-on werewolf she has boobs. Thats right. A werewolf with boobs. Its worth watching for that alone. Despite the plot sounding fairly grizzly, Ginger Snaps is (darkly) hilarious. From sarcastic fake suicide notes, to a complete acceptance of the awkward entertainment that periods provide, Ginger Snaps is a coming-of-age film that is a world apart from the rest.
