10 Amazing Costume Designs From Mediocre Films
5. Wonderland's Inhabitants - Alice In Wonderland (2010)
While the film itself misses the mark when it comes to charm, the visuals are certainly impressive, and the costumes are distinct to the point of cartoonishness, with designs so strong they're largely more memorable than the actual film.
The colours employed in this film work well despite the film's Burtonish lighting and dreary colour correction, and the silhouette, styles and patterns assigned to the big-headed Red Queen and her eye-wateringly bright White Queen sister work well for the visual medium. The Hatter in particular employs beautifully bombastic patternwork on his own clothing, and Wasikowska's Alice is distinct in her overlarge, wispy blue dress and her shining, heroic silver armour. The costumes really do justify the name Wonderland, when it comes down to it.
Designer Colleen Atwood has done similarly bombastic, theatrical, and truly memorable work before, with films such as the movie musical adaptations Chicago and Sweeney Todd, as well as Memoirs of a Geisha - along with another film that'll show up on this list soon enough.
