When Antiviral first came out back in 2012, it was a pretty good venture into body horror supported by a strong performance from leading man Caleb Landry Jones. It had its fair share of ‘ick’ and a simple but sufficiently gross plotline, overall being a good entry to the genre from the son one of its most beloved creators, David Cronenberg.

Brandon Cronenberg didn’t know it at the time but his feature debut would be made a lot weirder in the coming years by something completely out of his control. The very idea that the film revolves around - of labs creating meat made from celebrity cells so that fans can eat their idols - came to life in 2014.

A startup called BiteLabs started campaigning for support across the internet, spreading their intention to use celebrity tissue samples to create artisanal salami. This was completely independent of Cronenberg’s film, it was a happy coincidence without the happy.

Now that we know that people actually have an appetite for celebrity meat (if you’ll pardon the pun) it seems a little too weird to rewatch the film. The world becomes more of a dystopia every day, the last thing we need is to tempt fate by bringing this idea back to life.
