You might’ve seen Cloverfield director Matt Reeves’ very good but kind of unnecessary American remake Let Me In but its source material, Swedish director Tomas Alfredson’s critically acclaimed Let the Right One In, is really where it’s at.

Yes, it’s based on a book and yes, it’s a vampiric love story but fear not. It’s eerily beautiful and oddly heart-warming with a precociously talented young cast and just the right amount of gore, but most importantly it’s about as far from Twilight as you can get.

Starring Kare Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson as pre-teen outsiders Oskar and Eli – a bullied schoolboy and a centuries-old eternal vampire child, respectively – who bond over their shared loneliness, it’s a brutal yet enchanting reminder that it’s possible to bring something new even to a genre as hackneyed as vampire horror.
