10 Amazing Psychological Horrors You've Never Heard Of
1. The Innocents (1961)
Going all the way back to the 60s now, we have this British adaptation of the famous novella ‘The Turn of the Screw’ - which is said to have been based on real paranormal events.
A woman applies for her first governess job at a large manor house, caring for two children (Flora and Miles) on the charge of their uncle, after their previous governess died suddenly less than a year prior.
The governess becomes concerned after seeing the children occasionally behaving weirdly, and starts seeing apparitions of a man and woman and hearing their disembodied voices.
It has all the classic staples of haunting horror, including creepy children, spectres appearing in a castle-like manor and a secretive family trying to bury some forbidden truths.
If you happen to be a fan of the ‘Haunting’ series on Netflix (Haunting of Bly Manor, Haunting of Hill House) then this story will seem awfully familiar to you. This is because the Haunting of Bly Manor is based on the same novella, featuring many of the same names and basic plot points!
If you’ve already watched Bly Manor then this is still worth your time as there are some notable differences in the plot - plus it's hours and hours shorter so you’re not losing much time. If not, I recommend both as both are fantastic retellings of an intriguing old tale.
