Movie directors often have an eye for detail and leave no stone unturned in their attempts to create a fictional world for their film’s characters to inhabit. A lot of the background designs and props used have little significance but are important pieces of the puzzle to the crew involved.

The production team on Se7en took this to another level when it came to creating the ominous writings found in John Doe’s notebooks for the film. Detectives Somerset and Mills come across a large collection of notebooks when looking around John Doe’s apartment and find many clues about the man’s view of the world from his sinister scribblings.

Most movies would leave many of the pages blank unless they were necessary to the plot of the film, but the crew on Se7en took the time to fill these pages with dark musings on what they believed Doe would think about society.

The notebooks reportedly took over two months to write and ended up adding over $15,000 to the film’s budget. This costly and time-consuming task not only seems fairly pointless to the finished piece, but must have put the crew members in a strange state of mind when writing these eerie entries.
