The Buzz: Based on Sebastian Barry's award-winning 2008 novel, with six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, In America) directing traffic, while Rooney Mara, Vanessa Redgrave, and Eric Bana star. If it can capture the heart of the novel, as a 101-year-old woman reminisces on her life, it's going to be an emotional, Oscar-courting ride.

Why It's Already Lost: Another in a long line of underwhelming projects from Sheridan, The Secret Scripture has been widely panned by the press, who have dismissed it as an incoherent, sappy melodrama that's blatantly Oscar-baiting in the most tiresome way.

Even the performances have been criticised, while the consensus seems to be that Sheridan and co. have failed to bring the essence of the source material to the big screen. What a missed opportunity.
