10. Dragged Across Concrete

The latest film from writer-director S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99) is not for the faint of heart or stomach, but it is an uncommonly unsentimental and uncompromising thriller.

Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are marvelous as two corrupt cops who, after being suspended for their violent conduct, enter the criminal underworld in the pursuit of a payday to secure their futures.

Like Zahler's previous films, Dragged Across Concrete is an unapologetic slice of arthouse exploitation: a meticulous 159-minute slow-burn filled with semi-Shakespearean dialogue and occasional bursts of nauseating violence.

Its refusal to conform to fashionable politics and its steadfast commitment to presenting two unlikeable protagonists ensures it won't be for everyone, but it ultimately lands on the right side of ugly, and is simply too compellingly acted to be ignored.
