French director Alexandre Aja has made some really interesting stuff in his career, from Switchblade Romance to his The Hills Have Eyes remake to Crawl to Horns. You know, that film where Daniel Radcliffe had horns?

Anyway, in 2021, Aja put out Oxygen, a French-language horror set in a mysterious future. Although, the audience isn’t supposed to know that at the start, as protagonist Liz (Mélanie Laurent) wakes up in a cryogenic pod with no memory of how she got there.

Through conversations with a friendly A.I., Liz discovers that she’s actually aboard a spaceship on a secret mission to find a cure for a disease that poses a great threat to the human race. She was woken up early when her pod started to malfunction, which means she needs to fix it before all the oxygen runs out.

Get it? That’s why that’s the name of the film.

A deeply claustrophobic take on space travel movies like Interstellar, Oxygen has all the terror of an isolated frontier story, the race-against-time nature of a heist movie, and the humongous stakes of a sci-fi epic.

Just please don't watch it if you’re scared of enclosed spaces.
