Don’t worry if you haven’t seen Vampire Hunters A through C - they don’t exist.

Instead, Vampire Hunter D is a standalone fantasy horror from Japan, directed by Toyoo Ashida and based on a series of light novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi. The film came out in 1985, but was set way, way into the future - the year 12,090 to be precise.

Now that is some speculative fiction.

This animated feature stars Michie Tomizawa as Doris Lang, a young woman bitten by a menacing vampire lord. In order to prevent herself from transforming into a bloodsucker, Doris pays for the services of D (Kaneto Shiozawa), a hunter who is tasked with killing the powerful lord before it’s too late.

Vampire Hunter D brings together all the fun of a grand samurai epic with the gore and violence of the bloodiest anime. Even if you’re not that into horror, the gorgeous animation and well-plotted story should keep you entertained.

Despite receiving two separate English dubs two decades apart, Vampire Hunter D remains a lost gem to many. Now is the time for that to change.
