In a list about awesome movie gunfights it was kind of inevitable that John Woo would turn up at some point. This 1987 sequel to his breakthrough Hong Kong movie A Better Tomorrow sees the return of stars Chow Yun-fat, Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung as they take on a ring of evil counterfeiters. It's a movie that's decidedly sillier than its predecessor just check out the scene with Chow Yun-fat and the bowl of rice - but it's still a lot of fun with plenty of Woo's trademark style and two-handed gunplay. And naturally, the best is saved for last. While Woo has pretty much disowned this follow-up thanks to rampant re-editing by the producer and studio, he still takes credit for it's insane finale, which he rightly describes as a "mad painting." Our three heroes arrive at the mansion of the main villain looking to avenge the death of a friend, and proceed to wipe out well over a hundred men. Guns, swords, grenades, dynamite and axes are used in various combinations to create a bloodbath that's a few bodies short of being officially labeled a genocide. Chow Yan-fat alone kills about 70 men, which is more than some action stars achieve in their entire filmographies. Nobody shoots action as stylishly as Woo and while Hard Boiled and The Killer may get all the attention, this sequence is certainly up there with his best work. If you're an action fan then this scene is a must. Are there any other obscure gun battles that deserve to be on this list. Share your picks below in the comments thread.
