10 Awesome Movies With Awful Special Effects

1. Jaws

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I91DJZKRxs Here's a visual effect that's terrible but manages to get away with it for a few reasons - a) it's practical and therefore less garish, b) the film is downright brilliant and c) everyone involved with the film's production openly pokes fun at how crap it looks. To be fair, when the shark prop - nicknamed Bruce - is swimming about below the ocean depths, he's pretty convincing, but the second he rears up to try and take a bite out of Hooper, Quint and Brody, it all goes wrong. The rubber falseness of the shark is woefully apparent, yet the film is still so heart-poundingly tense that it really doesn't matter all that much. Spielberg is skilled enough a director to do a lot with little; we rarely see Bruce pop up above water, a less is more approach that keeps the film taut and also means we don't get too used to seeing a rubbish prop animal flailing around above water. Which dreadful special effect do you find the worst? Let us know in the comments below.
