Mike Nichols' smash hit, Oscar-nominated 2004 drama Closer is a fascinating meditation on contemporary cynical values about love and sex, and to that end uses its focal cast members as mouth-pieces for these values.

The three main culprits are Dan (Jude Law), Anna (Julia Roberts) and Larry (Clive Owen), who are guilty of lying, cheating and using sex to further questionable personal goals.

Then there's Alice aka Jane (Natalie Portman), who seems initially sympathetic for being cheated on by Dan, but even she ultimately comes across as fickle, naive and childish.

The performances are splendid and the writing fantastic, but there aren't many uplifting lessons waiting at the end of the film.
