10 Awesome Movies With Terrible Endings

8. Signs - Water Was The Weakness

A completely unexpected twist is almost always guaranteed whenever you sit down to take in an M. Night Shyamalan feature.

But perhaps the most infamous late swerve ever to show up in one of his projects went down in the generally quite engrossing 2002 sci-fi picture Signs.

After discovering crop circles in their fields and the director marvellously building up almost tangible suspense throughout much of the film that follows, the Hess family and the rest of the planet find themselves being invaded by alien lifeforms.

Then, it happened.

When one of these extra-terrestrials invades the Hess family home, they soon discover that this terrifying creature actually has a rather simple weakness: water. You know, the stuff that makes up the majority of this planet the aliens have specifically chosen to invade? Genius.

As Joaquin Phoenix's Merril defeats the alien by swinging away at the conveniently dotted about glasses of H20, what once felt like a horrifying threat are soon made to look like a bunch of rather dumb creatures, with Shyamalan's Signs spectacularly stumbling flat on its face at the final hurdle.
