10 Awesome Obscure Alan Rickman Roles You Probably Missed
10. CBGB
The story of CBGBs, the legendary New York club where Television, The Ramones and scores of other legendary bands cut their teeth, is so ingrained in rock n roll folklore that a movie about the venues rise and fall was always going to be controversial. Would the purists denounce the way in which the filmmakers hoisted the venue out of the underground and onto the big screen? It would take a brave actor, then, to step into the lead role of Hilly Kristal, the venues dysfunctional and eccentric yet visionary founder. Step forward 67 year old Alan Rickman who donned a perm, threw on a denim jacket and put in a sterling performance as the permanently frazzled music obsessive. Owing to being an independent production, the film never hit the headlines the way Rickmans more well known work did, premiering at the CBGB Music & Film Festival and only showing in select American theatres, though the obvious love, respect and enthusiasm with which the movie was made, alongside Rickmans ability to nail down the character of Kristal to a tee, sees CBGB take pride of place in the DVD collections of punk fans all over the planet.
