3. Terminator Salvation
The idea of Christian Bale starring in a Terminator movie already filled me with plenty of hope that the final product would be good, given how judicious he is at selecting projects, and this superbly-cut trailer certainly added to my excitement. Using Nine Inch Nails' haunting tune "The Day the World Went Away", this trailer creates an atmosphere of sure dread and despair that suits the nature of the future war, and Christian Bale appears to give a fittingly grizzled performance as resistance leader John Connor. What's more, the visual effects look great, the action sizzles, and the Sam Worthington angle - regarding his identity - seemed fascinating. Problem one: the trailer gave away the twist, that Sam Worthington's character is part-cyborg, when this isn't revealed until half-way through the film, then there's the fact that the final product is so resolutely detached. There's no dark humour, no sense of humanity; it's just a laborious series of set pieces, murkily shot without a single ounce of soul.
