Horror movie sequels are generally a bad idea. There are exceptions but when a studio greenlights a follow-up to a successful entry in the genre, it’s almost never because they actually have a good idea for a sequel. It’s because they want more of that sweet, sweet box office money. And if they’re really hooked on that cashflow, they might even push forward on a third movie, whether the public wants it or not.

Rings is the movie that not even the most diehard franchise fans asked for. Whereas the first Ring movie redefined the genre and cemented the Western world’s obsession with Japanese horror, the third instalment manages to somehow be both lazy and over-stuffed.

One moment it's ramming pointless backstory down your throat that nobody cares about and the next it’s trying to shake you awake again with a phoned-in jump scare.

Johnny Galecki plays a college professor attempting to investigate Samara and the power that she holds through the cursed videotapes. That previous sentence has more detail about his character than the movie ever gives him.
