10 Awful Movie Retcons That Pissed Off Everybody

1. Highlander II Bullzdozes Everything - Highlander II: The Quickening

A Highlander franchise seemed unlikely, given the first film focused on the conclusion of the story. The film details immortals and their battles to be the only one and by the end of film number one there’s just that. Or for a bit more precision, there’s none at all since the ever sought after prize is mortality. Main protagonist MacLeod stood victorious with star power Sean Connery deceased before the credits rolled. A sound and seemingly definite conclusion.

Nope.

Highlander II: The Quickening bulldozes every last plot point of the first film. The immortals are actually aliens, Sean Connery’s a master or resurrection and McLeod the Highlander’s from another planet and thus not a highlander at all, making even the title redundant. The all important prize is also retconned into a choice between dying slowly or straight up execution. Bit of a rock and a hard place there.

To top it all off, the key plot point in the original of MacLeod first meeting Ramirez, discovering his true self and other character development suffers the mighty retcon as well. Here, we discover the two entered into some kind of space partnership thing via strange space goop. Also, the immortals are now to be known as Zeistians.

The king of all retcons, Highlander II obliterated its predecessor to the last line and was panned by just about anyone unlucky enough to see it.
