Susan Hill's ghost story, The Woman In Black, was hugely successful, allowing it to be adapted into a West End show. After it became the second-longest running West End play ever, it was no surprise when it was adapted into a film in 2012. Even though it received mixed reviews, The Woman In Black film adaptation made nearly ten times its budget, warranting a sequel.

Though the follow-up has the late Helen McCrory in the lead role, it's not enough for this film to come across as anything besides a pointless sequel and an insult to the original story. The novel focused on slowly building tension, and the play unsettled the audience with subtle but deeply unnerving images.

This movie throws subtlety out the window and relies on CGI-infested jump scares that aren't the slightest bit scary. McCrory is convincing as a mother doing all she can to protect her family, and some of the visuals are striking, but it's so devoid of what the original story stood for th you can barely classify it as an adaptation of Susan Hill's work.
