10 Bad Movies That Wasted Great CGI

5. Jupiter Ascending

Sucker Punch Movie
Warner Bros.

Coming hot off the heels of Bound, The Matrix trilogy, and Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending looked to be another win from the multi award-winning Wachowskis. However, as you would've guessed from its inclusion on this list, it was not.

Intended to be a large-scale sci-fi epic to rival Star Wars, the film saw Mina Kunis as the titular Jupiter Jones, a janitor who discovers she's destined for bigger things (mainly restoring balance to the cosmos) when she's greeted by an intergalactic warrior (Channing Tatum).

Although the film was able to fulfil its promise when it came to its world-building and action sequences thanks to its CGI effects (which still incorporated piratical stunts done on camera) alongside another stunning score by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino, everything else fell light years short of the mark.

In addition to the lacklustre performances by the central cast, which also saw Eddie Redmayne as an overly melodramatic villain, and lack of chemistry between the leads, the film was heavily criticised for its sloppy writing plot, being dubbed another mindless sci-fi spectacle.

It's not all bad, though. The film has since found itself a cult following and the Wachowskis went on to give us the sensational Sense 8.
