10 Baseball Movies That Knocked It Out Of The Park

7. Field of Dreams

Yeah, I know ... Field Of Dreams is often at the top of baseball movie lists and makes men cry, etc. And while I will admit that the film captures some of the mystical elements of the game, it is largely an overly-sentimental film that focuses more on star Kevin Costner's emotional longings than it does about baseball.

In the film, Costner hears voices emanating from his cornfield that instruct him to build a baseball field in it. The famous "build it, and he will come" turns out to be true, as the resurrected Black Sox players come out of the corn field to play baseball once again. In time, Costner is reunited with his dead father (who idolized Shoeless Joe Jackson), and they play catch together.

It's a lovely film and certainly heart-rending, but it doesn't capture the game as much as it captures elements of the game - the effect of a father and son playing catch, or the thrills and regrets of past achievements. That, coupled with Costner's easygoing, everyman charm, sells the film to fans and non-fans alike.
