6. The Happiness Of The Katakuris
Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike has directed more weird and twisted movies than a lot of other directors combined, whether it's the hyperactive Yakuza thrills of Dead Or Alive or the darkly comic horror of Audition, many of his films would fit quite happily on this list. With its use of musical numbers and stop motion animation, The Happiness Of The Katakuris earns its place on this spot for being so consciously defiant of genre expectations, something which amplifies the craziness even more. A horror-comedy on the surface, the trials and tribulations of the eponymous family become increasingly fraught as each customer at their guest house winds up dead. The Happiness Of The Katakuris is a remake of the South Korean movie The Quiet Family, although viewed side by side there's very little there to compare - Miike's film is considerably more outrageous, as you would expect from the man who brought Ichi The Killer to the big screen.
