10 Beautiful Horror Films Of The 2010s
3. Hereditary (2018)
You may have already heard this, but Hereditary is the first full-length feature film from director Ari Aster, and what a debut it is. Hereditary is possibly one of the creepiest horror films ever to grace our screen. It's a slow, steady, and shocking story, intensifying the feeling of hidden eyes stalking the Graham family in their beautiful home.
Of the most oustanding visuals of the film is the opening slow crawl from overwhelming darkness toward the house where the majority of the story unfolds. Whilst you could point to the large open spaces with mountains littering the background, the visually stunning moments in the film actually derive from the most terrifying moments.
This film is much slower than all other films on this list, to the point it is almost meditative, it imbues a seeping creepiness throughout. Whereas the beauty of The Void is outside of the monstrous events taking place, it is right at the centre of the horrors taking place in Hereditary.
The locations chosen for this film have innate sadness, flowing from the grief-stricken family who remain there. There is a sense of melancholic charm in the events that seem to take place in what can only be described as a sacrificial doll-house.
