2. Crimson Peak (2015)
Its directed by Guillermo del Toro, enough said. No seriously, his use of colour to convey emotion throughout his entire catalogue of films has garnered the legendary director recognition from both critics and fans alike.
Crimson Peak is not the most spectacular of his films, its story and acting don't match that of The Shape of Water, and the fantastical wonders and horrors of Pan's Labyrinth. But the cinematography of Crimson Peak is what lands it on this list.
Edith follows her heart and finds herself living in a house, or rather a dilapidated mansion that sits on top of blood-red clay. Already here, the use of colour is central to the storytelling that takes place. With a blanket of white filling the frame much later on in the film to contrast the red attached to the deeply depraved monsters who prey on her.
The tale takes place in 19th century Buffalo, where once séances would have been the closest thing to communing with the dead. Unfortunately for the characters within this film, the dead commune in a much more direct manner.
The house on the hill in this instance, where the paranormal occurs, is almost like a R-rated version of Hogwarts, except without the witches and wizards, and with secret haunted rooms with rather unsavoury activities happening in them.
