The Lord of the Rings: Special Edition box set is a requirement for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Tolkien. Complete with an additional 128 minutes of footage, spread across the three movies, Jackson's full vision will take you the better part of the day to watch in its entirety.

And if you're a true fanatic of these movies, then the series of making-of documentaries accompany each instalment are as equally enjoyable. In homage to J.R.R. Tolkien's supplementary writings, the documentaries are entitled 'The Appendices'. They offer up all the information any fan could hope to learn about the making of Jackson's trilogy.

Divided into a series of smaller documentaries, such as "From Book To Script" and "A Day In The Life Of A Hobbit", they're filled with amusing anecdotes and accounts of onset accidents. But they also explore the painstaking attention to detail that went into creating the costumes, sets and characters of Middle-earth.

Embarking on this multi-hour viewing quest will leave you with an even more profound love for these movies. Not least because the sense of fellowship embodied by Tolkien's characters, was mirrored by all those involved in bringing his epic-tale to the big screen.
