10 Behind The Scenes Documentaries Even Better Than The Movies
2. American Movie (1999)
American Movie details the making of a film you've likely never heard of, and most likely would never think to watch. Mark Borchardt's Coven (1997) is a horror-short which tells the tale of a struggling, alcoholic writer who becomes entangled with the occult - it's one of those indie flicks that barely shrugs off the mantel of 'homemade-movie'.
But the story of the filmmaker's dedication to complete his vision against the odds is highly entertaining. Borchardt's efforts were hamstrung by a lack of budget, no real sense of organisation, and a less than competent cast and crew. Indeed, everyone involved either behind the camera or in front of it, was either a friend of Borchardt's or lived in his neighbourhood.
Despite all the issues and setbacks, the filmmaker's determination and excitement for his project becomes equal parts inspiring and touching. There are genuine moments of comedy, drama and heartwarming sentiment. Although the guy never really made it in the industry, his passion is nevertheless infectious and inspiring.
