10 Belated Film Sequels Hollywood Should Never Make

4. A separation, A Divorce and Two Funerals

Groundhog Day
Universal Pictures

The Original:

Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994). Scriptwriter Richard Curtis announced himself as the new doyen of romantic comedy, tempering all the jolly romantic stuff with a scene of John Hannah reading a sad W.H. Auden poem. Sales of Auden’s books went through the roof.

The film was a massive hit in the USA where they love hearing people say the F word in a British accent.

The Sequel:

Curtis has a mid life crisis, writing and directing this staggeringly bleak sequel in which romantic leads Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell break up and subsequently die.

John Hannah returns to look suitably grief stricken and everyone leaves the cinema feeling miserable. Still, two funerals means two mawkish poetry readings and W.H. Auden's estate rejoices.
