10. The Avengers
Certainly the highest grossing entry on this list. The Avengers is a fun, brainless summer blockbuster and that's all it's ever going to be. Can we please stop treating it like it was the second coming? The only thing it has going for it is the novelty of seeing all of Marvel's B-level superheroes come together and even then that wears off quite quickly. Calling it the best superhero movie ever made or one of the best films to come out in 2012 is absurd. Especially considering that 2012 gave us truly amazing films like The Master, Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook and Life of Pi. Seeing a film five years and at least 8 other superhero movies in the making finally come to fruition without completely failing has blinded a lot of people from admitting any legitimate criticism. The Avengers features a ludicrous story that's riddled with plot holes that make most of the movies that preceded it irrelevant, lazy exposition and a severely anti-climactic finale. It has snappy dialogue and comic book fun going for it and that's about it. The main fault with the movie is there's no way to tell it apart from any of the other Marvel movies. Instead of feeling like this huge event it just feels like another film leading up to the huge event. It is directed like a movie designed by a committee. All of the best superhero movies have a signature that makes them rise above their peers. Raimi's Spider-Man movies have his signature dark humour and frenetic direction while Nolan's Dark Knight movies feature his use of highly efficient storytelling and grim visuals. When compared to the greatest superhero movies The Avenger just doesn't hold up.
