10 Beloved And Critically Acclaimed Films That Aren't Actually Very Good

9. Scarface

Scarface Perhaps the most overrated film in the history of cinema? My favorite genre in the world is the crime/gangster drama so when I finally saw Scarface for the first time I was extremely excited. What I expected was a compelling, fun, violent and morally ambiguous film in the vein of all the best crime movies. What I got was an overlong B-movie that takes itself way too seriously and slags off after the first hour. Gangster movies have to feature characters that are unlikable being presented in a human and compassionate light so the audience can see them less as characters and more as real people, Think of The Godfather, Goodfellas and Mean Streets. Scarface doesn't do that at all. Tony Montana is one of the most insufferable characters to ever grace the screen. He is given absolutely zero likable traits and comes across as incredibly annoying for 90% of the run time. I can't even begin to explain how dated Scarface has become with the horrid 80s synth pop score and the frustratingly over the top acting. Some of the better movies ever made have become dated, like Nosferatu and Psycho, but they still retain the ability to be compelling because they are incredible movies no matter what decade they were made. Scarface is just a bad film that is even more worse for wear than its 1930s counterpart which is a much finer film.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
