10 Beloved And Critically Acclaimed Films That Aren't Actually Very Good

8. The Hunger Games

Hunger Games When it comes to movies being watered down to become more commercially viable The Hunger Games sits high on the throne that is modern Hollywood. I went into the movie with an open mind given how much I love Jennifer Lawrence, my penchant for violent movies and the fact that Science Fiction is a particular favorite genre of mine. Needless to say The Hunger Games squanders one of the greatest actresses in the world on a story that is cliched and direction that is incomprehensible at the most important moments of the narrative. What is most annoying about the movie is that it took a violent story and toned it down for mass commercial appeal and sacrificed artistic integrity through censoring, or blatantly removing, the greatest moments from its source material. This probably bothered me a lot more than most people just because I have a particular hatred of censorship and was really hoping The Hunger Games would be treated with respect and hopefully even manage to become America's answer to Battle Royale. I was wrong on both counts. I should have known the film was going to be poor when I saw the PG-13 rating and the enormous tween population in line with my friends and I to see it. It's certainly not America's answer to Battle Royale, that's Kill Bill vol.1, but its worst sin is that it failed to attempt to do anything new or interesting with its Science Fiction premise in a climate that is incredibly supportive towards Science Fiction.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
